A threefold celebration- Celebrating 119 years of glory of the Great Old Lady by the Sea, 200th anniversary of the Miraculous Apparition of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in Bordeaux and 74 Years of Independence
The 3rd of February 2022 ushered in a day of celebrations.
Familians world over celebrated the 119th School Day of our Alma mater. Established way back in 1903, this Grand Old Lady by the Sea has stood the test of time and continues to produce young women of virtue, wisdom and integrity, enlightened by the virtues of charity and modesty.
It was also the 200th anniversary of the miraculous apparition of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in Bordeaux. A two week long preparation was organized by the Sisters and the students of the Supatha and Supala, with 3 days allocated for grade wise prayers and adoration at the feet of the Blessed Sacrament in the school chapel. An act for the day was allocated after each Morning Prayer session, where the students could actively and meaningfully partake in this great event. Furthermore various competitions were organized for the students to enhance and inculcate within them the values and virtues held true by the Good Father and blessings bestowed on the Familian family through the apparition of Our Lord. The celebration this great event saw its culmination on the 3rd of February 2022, with the events of the day beginning with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and benediction.
Then as proud Sri Lankans, we celebrated the 74th Independence Day after years of foreign dominion.
The day also provided us with an opportunity to felicitate Rev. Sr. Jesmin Fernando, who was appointed to a very important position in the Holy Family congregation. Her appointment as General Counselor was indeed an honour and a matter of great joy for us who are part and parcel of the Familian family.
Benediction was followed by the celebration of the Holy Mass by Rev.Fr. Bennet Shantha of the Holy Family Priest Associates.
The National flag and the School Flag were then hoisted by the Principal Rev. Sr. Ranjani Silva and the Head Girl Minuki Gunesekara.
Rev. Sr. Ranjanie, our Principal, spoke of the significance of the day’s events and was followed by an array of entertaining and meaningful performances organized by the singing and dancing teachers of both the College and the Primary schools.
Rev. Sr. Jesmin Fernando was requested to address the gathering and she spoke of the need for us to take forth the vision of the Good Father forward and be people who would help all around us without a second thought. As a symbol of our joy at her appointment she was also presented with a token of celebration by Rev. Sr. Ranjani and Rev. Sr Euphrasia, the Superior of the Convent. Flowers were also presented by the children of Supatha to Rev. Sr. Jesmin.
Our Head Girl, Minuki Gunasekara was invited to speak to wrap up the days events and she enlightened everyone to the all-important point of ‘Once a Familian, always a Familian.’ She touched on very valid points concerning school life and the need for one to always keep the blue and white flag flying high and to being glory and honour to God and our Alma Mater in all that we do.
Sister Principal’s announcement of a long interval and treat for teachers and students brought much applause and appreciation from both parties.
It was an overall day of celebration and fun, which was a much welcomed deviation from regular school and furthermore from the cloud of anxiety brought in through the pandemic.
